Learn Japanese: a card saying hello in Japanese

Learn Japanese Online Hub teaches everyday Japanese one short lesson a day. Each lesson covers a few phrases you would actually use, like saying hello, giving your name or ordering food, explains how they work, then quizzes you.

What is free

  • Hiragana and katakana charts, 104 characters each
  • The 109 kanji you need for the JLPT N5
  • 831 beginner (N5) words and 59 grammar points
  • 19 situation guides for restaurants, trains, hotels, shopping and more
  • Days 1 to 7 of the daily lessons with no account, and days 8 to 30 with a free account
  • Printable charts and writing practice sheets

Where to start

Starting with kanji is the most common way to stall, so the site suggests a simple order:

  1. Learn hiragana first. It takes about a week at 15 minutes a day.
  2. Start Day 1 of the daily lessons, and do one a day.
  3. Do the vocabulary review cards every day, even on days you skip the lesson.
  4. Add katakana next, then kanji with its own 30-day course.

Why the review cards matter

The vocabulary cards use spaced repetition. Each word comes back just before you would forget it, and the gap gets longer every time you remember it. Ten minutes a day does more than two hours once a week.
